Thérèse-Marie Chaix's award-winning orchestral work, STRANGE BIRD, is celebrated in this vibrant 10th Anniversary edition.
Timbral swarms cover the score in crayon cloudbursts of color. The orchestra jolts and sways in choreographed movement as they play. An Emogram illuminates the emotional arcs of each instrumentalist. Percussive eruptions form portals, propelling the listener into new sonic territories.
This 10th anniversary technicolor pocket-sized study score includes program notes, sketches in full color, and dives into the creative process behind the music. The piece's unique elements are explored and explained, including STRANGE BIRD's color clouds, the choreography for the orchestra, and the Emogram—a diagram of emotions and how they correspond to each instrumentalist. This book also includes three versions of the score: a bird's-eye view of the full color marked-up score, and page-by-page scans of the color score as well as the original award-winning black and white printed score.
Conceived from an eleven-bar sketch for harp, STRANGE BIRD is an exercise in pushing the boundaries of a seemingly limited idea through the exploration of the orchestra's inexhaustible color palette. The strings double the harp to create a magnified and amplified mega-harp. Rhythmic and melodic motifs from the harp are picked up by groups of instruments, and at times the entire orchestra. From machine to breathing organism, the orchestra, like a flock of birds dispersing and coming together, transforms in shape and depth of color as it moves. STRANGE BIRD tells the tale of a place where a swarm of birds owns the sky and what happens when you have the courage to break away.
